Frequently Asked Questions About Modern Farmhouse Style
“Modern farmhouse” refers to an interior design style that evokes many of the same charms of a traditional country farmhouse, like fixtures made of natural materials and open spaces for gathering with family, but with a sleek modern edge. As opposed to a more traditional country style that leans toward ornate handicraft and folk art motifs—think lace, needlepoint, quilt squares, and patterned wallpaper—modern farmhouse design features cleaner lines in pared down finishes like glass and colors like white. An easy rule of thumb: the modern farmhouse look makes will make sense in the country or the city as long as the design is composed with intention.
It’s important to remember that “in style” and “out of style” are subjective terms. While the cutting edge of interior design is ever-shifting, a discerning eye can curate a distinguished room design that pulls from a variety of aesthetics at any time. Over the past few years, modern farmhouse style has had a distinct “moment” of popularity. Some designers and homeowners may be feeling a nudge to embrace new style trends with a more eclectic balance between modern and rustic styles or a different theme altogether. The beauty of modern farmhouse light fixtures and home decor pieces is that they do not lean too far in either the country or contemporary directions. So, if you find yourself drawn to the natural materials and simple elegance of the modern farmhouse look, you can certainly incorporate your chosen pieces in a stylish, up-to-date design that leans eclectic, vintage, shabby chic, bohemian, or even maximalist. Try mixing pieces from multiple styles such as a farmhouse ceiling light with an antique-inspired area rug, or a farmhouse pendant light over an industrial style kitchen island.
Since modern farmhouse lighting and home decor celebrates natural textures and finishes, color palettes are often simple and reflective of the outside world. Think of the complex browns in reclaimed and salvaged wood fixtures, the unassuming shimmer of bronze, brass, and copper lights, or the fresh, clean aesthetic of white, beige, and cream neutral rugs. If you are looking for a pop of color in a farmhouse design, stick with colors you might find when you step outside a farmhouse door: sky blue, deep forest green, or classic barn red.
