⚠️ WARNING: This product can expose you to materials which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov

The warning listed on our website is in accordance with a law implemented by the state of California called Proposition-65. Under this regulation, California law requires businesses to provide warnings for products containing chemicals that the state of California has identified as carcinogens or reproductive toxins. Recent amendments to this law require any retailers selling to California residents to list this warning on their website.

There are currently almost 1,000 substances on the Proposition-65 list, ranging from cigarette smoke and asbestos to aspirin and wood dust. One of the materials listed is lead, and because most light fixtures contain brass in the sockets, we are required to put this warning label on our light fixtures. Brass is a metal alloy consisting of copper, zinc and small amounts of lead, which is what triggers the “lead” warning under California Proposition-65 since lead has been shown to cause cancer when it is ingested.

We hope that this explains things a little more clearly. If you have any additional questions, we would suggest visiting the website mentioned above for more information and the complete list of substances that require warnings under Proposition-65.

    Beautiful but...

This mirror is absolutely gorgeous and everything is hoped it would be. My only issue is there is a warning on the back about the material: titanium dioxide, which can cause cancer and birth defects. I’ve emailed Shades of Light and waiting for a response. Just want all buyers to be aware. Again- beautiful! -HELLO CS, For your own sense of safety and well-being I suggest you Google Titanium Oxide and read for yourself. I did and the two resources that Google ranked highest for me were: https://www.bestfoodfacts.org/titanium-dioxide-maynard/ https://www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org/titanium-dioxide/ Summary: Manufacturer is complying to California prop 65. From what I have read any sort of normal consumer contact with Titanium dioxide is not only considered safe but it would be near impossible to avoid. Titanium is the ninth most common Element on earth and commonly found in plants and animals. It naturally interacts with oxygen to form titanium oxides. Titanium dioxide is an inactive, insoluble material that makes things look whiter. It has been used for over a century in everything from food, toothpaste, paper, soap, sunscreen, cosmetics and much more. Safety studies of the pharmaceutical and cosmetics use of titanium dioxide as a nanoparticle have mixed results. However, we are not talking about the pharmaceutical use as a nanoparticle but rather in its common usage as paint pigment. Wikipedia says, “It has been estimated that titanium dioxide is used in two-thirds of all pigments…” The inconclusive concern over its pharmaceutical use has triggered the prop65 warning label.
