What size outdoor light should you look for? A good rule of thumb is that outdoor lamps should be about one-fifth the height and width of the doorway, including the trim. (Take for example a 100” high by 60” wide entrance; look for a fixture that is approximately 20”Hx12”W) You want your post lights to be as large or larger than the lights you use at your front door. Outdoor lights with several low wattage candle bulbs have advantages over those that use a single bulb: they provide more light with less glare and just seem to look more glamorous at night.
