Here are some basic tips to help you determine the proper size of a chandelier for a dining room. Let’s start by getting the measurements of the room in feet. Just add the length and width of the room together in feet and substitute inches for feet (A 10'x13' dining room, for example, would take approximately a 23" wide fixture.) This number gives you a great starting point for the width of an appropriately sized chandelier for your room. In the dining room you would also want to consider the size of the dining room table. For determining the size of a chandelier based on your table size, the chandelier width should be at least 12" smaller in width than the width of the dining table. Chandeliers can be smaller in scale (mini chandeliers) when used in a foyer, hallway, powder room and bathroom for general lighting. Use a hanging lantern when a chandelier would be too large for the space. To properly hang a chandelier, place the chandelier about 30" above the table top (if ceiling is higher than 8', add 3" for each foot of ceiling height over 8'). Remember to order extra chain for higher ceilings. Chandeliers can add both style and importance to a room. They bring ambiance and the warm glow of candle light to any setting. The mood and intensity of a chandelier is best controlled by a dimmer. Here is an important tip on chandelier shades: most people don't realize that the wattage maximum of a chandelier is determined by the lampshades used on it! Smaller shades limit wattage. Chandelier shades can greatly enhance the function of a chandelier by reducing the glare and help to direct light down where it's needed.
