Before and After Contest Winner!

Author: Katrina

The time is finally here! It is time to announce the big winner or our customers BEFORE AND AFTER CONTEST. We had some really great entries. I was truly impressed with our customers spaces, displaying such creativity and style! I wanted to show everyone our “winners” space as well as some very impressive “honorable mentions”

Let’s start with the winner. The before pictures of this space were the what I would call conventional, not a lot of excitement going on but a nice space none the less.

What a difference a rug makes. Designer Cindy Schwarz chose our Ming Hand-Knotted Rug for her client’s home. It really warms the room and gives it the color it lacked. The rug complements the lovely neutral furniture and picks up the colors in the artwork above the fireplace perfectly. It is amazing how much larger the space feels once the rug is added. The rug defines the space and grounds the center, giving a since of finish and relaxation.

Then Cindy added our Soho Chandelier over the client’s dining table. A clean, classic look, I love how the chandelier complements the lines in the dining chairs and enlivens the warmth of the wood tones.

Nice picks and well done to our winner!!

Now some honorable mentions we just couldn’t keep to ourselves.

Maritza Strand redesigned her bedroom, furniture and all, but in the end found it was still lacking something. By simply changing the ceiling light, the room finally felt like the glamorous redesign she desired. We all hate those “builder boring” flushmount ceiling lights we inherit when we move in. Maritza chose our Organza Shade & Crystal Chandelier to take her room from “generic” to “dazzling”. Yes, you can hang a chandelier close to your ceiling in place of a flushmount!! We have tons of mini chandelier options for those low 8” ceilings.

A stunning kitchen transformation is always fun to see. Mandy Lark accentuated her amazing kitchen redo with our always popular Barcelona Pendant over the kitchen island. The accent lighting complements the space without being overwhelming. These pieces create fun light effects on the walls and ceiling, creating great mood lighting for entertaining. I bet some great parties are to be had in this space. Mandy says, “I feel like I got a whole new room!”

Spice Up Your Kitchen without emptying your bank account!

10 Easy Update Ideas for Your Kitchen

    1. Paint one wall a color. Or try a gradated color on the ceiling (going lighter towards the center).
    2. Change your pendants with larger hip pendants (or convert your recessed lights to pendants).

    1. Add a large shade over the chandelier above your eating table. Shop here.
    2. Add LED lighting above your cabinets. This will make a low ceiling seem higher.
    3. Add a rug. The new & improved “outdoor” rugs work really well in the kitchen because you can hose them off! They now look like tufted carpet!
    4. Add a bordered sisal rug and repeat the border fabric on your barstools!
    5. Recover your barstools in an updated fabric.
    6. Change your knobs (See Top Knobs Nouveau section here and here).
    7. Paint your outdated tile backsplash with epoxy paints in a random checkerboard pattern in various hues of the same color interspersed with a neutral (gray, white, beige, etc.). Here’s how!
    8. Replace your center ceiling light with monorail track. This allows for task and accent lighting on artwork, special cabinet and hood features, etc.

Eco-Friendly Cork Table Lamp, Twine Pendant Light

Lighting accounts for 20 to 25% of the electricity used annually in the United States. If energy-efficient lighting was used everywhere, the electricity required for lighting would be cut by 50% and aggregate national electricity demand would be reduced by 10%. Energy savings would exceed $12 billion a year while decreasing air pollution by 5%. This would be equivalent to taking 15 million cars off the road, resulting in less smog, acid rain and a slowing of global climate change.” *

Take care when selecting a fluorescent bulb to make sure you get the best color lighting for your needs. Color temperature is a measure of the output “color” of the bulb. The higher the number in kelvins (K), the “cooler” (bluer) the color light it produces. We recommend 3000K for a nice warm pinkish light and 5000K for a clear daylight (called full spectrum) effect. Some variations and inconsistencies exist among manufacturers. For example, Sylvania’s Daylight CFLs have a color temperature of 3500 K, while most other lamps with a “daylight” label have color temperatures of at least 5000K.

Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) come with a screw-in base that fits most table and floor lamps.
