Tyring to choose the perfect lampshade? Check out some of our tips featured on Shelter Pop here.

Are there any good rules of thumb for choosing the right size shade?
Lampshade Selection “Rules”

How do you determine shade height?
The height of a table lamp shade should be approximately the height of the base (to bottom of socket) x65% up to 80%.. The height of a floor lamp shade should be approximately the height of the base x47%. Measure shade height along the slant.
What about diameter?
The diameter (width) of a table shade should NEVER exceed the height of the base (to the bottom of the socket) and should be within 2″ of this dimension. Floor lamp shades should clear the widest part of the bulb by at least 3.5″ on each side of the bulb (unless using compact fluorescent bulb). Lampshade size is usually expressed in terms of its diameter (16″ shade has a diameter of 16″).
Are certain shade styles better for certain base styles? If so, do you have any pointers for matching the two?
Are there any “no-no’s” when it comes to choosing a shade?
If you’re debating between two similar shades, is it safe to go bigger or smaller?
Just like outdoor wall lights, it’s better to go larger to allow more wattage (click here for wattage and shade size guide).
Is there a shape of shade that flatters most bases?
Choose a shade with a shape that follows the general contours of the lamp. Square lamps look best with square shades and round lamps look best with round shades. A shapely lamp can take a shapely shade. An interesting alternative is to repeat the shape of the vase stand (as opposed to the vase shape) in the shade. For example, try a square shade on a round ginger jar with a square wood base.
Are there any shade shapes that are particularly hard to get right?
The more slender the body of the lamp, the shallower the shade can be. Extremely-flared shades are sometimes tricky to get right. Often you will need to change the size of the harp on your lamp when you change the lampshade. The more flared the shade, the shorter the harp you need. Lamps with more than one socket need to have wider and shorter shades and you may need a salesperson’s guidance.
Should the shade kiss the top of the lamp’s base? Should we see a little of the harp/hardware part of the lamp?
The bottom of the lampshade should come to the top of the body of the lamp so that no mechanical parts except 1/2 the neck show. The bottom of the shade should also fall at the eye level of the user. Most harps are interchangeable so you may need to purchase a new harp with your new shade. Harps come in regular and heavy (higher end lamps) and are usually imprinted in the top with their size in inches.

As homeowner Stacey Rogers recently found out, proper lighting can add depth and warmth to a space. No one knows this better than Ashton Harrison of Shades of Light, who shares tips on how to maximize your home lighting.
At Shades of Light we love shopping flea markets and antique shops! Part of the fun is the “hunt” for ideas we can turn into products or along the way we find things for our own homes. We were out bargain hunting recently and we found this great antique vase. It had such great potential and we knew exactly what it needed. Our fantastic team of electricians here easily made it into a fabulous table lamp. Wanted to show how easily a shade can change the look of a table lamp so we went with two options. First we chose a classic Scalloped Oval Silk Shade with a pearlized finial for a dressier look. For a tailored style we went with an Oval Drum Shade in linen topped with a brass ever popular Butterfly finial. One base; two looks!
We started with this pretty blushy peach antique vase

Two choices of shades & finials
While out on our rummage shopping another amazing find were two distressed iron scroll railings that we had to have!

Our vision was to create old world sconces and update them with chandelier shades to pull it all together. Here are three options that gave a different look to these one of a kind sconces.
First we picked this precious painted tin shade in “girly girl” colors of pink & green for a whimsical look.

Canopy Stripe Chandelier Shade
The Next shade was a more traditional look with a Fleur De Lis insignia.

Handpainted Fleur de Lis Chandelier Shade
Last but not least we chose a pretty ruffled shade in white & to give it a punch added a pink polka dot candle cover; adorable!

Who would have imagined that over 25 years ago a friendship and simple idea would grow to be the company Vera Bradley is today? So many things have worked in our favor. Having a great idea at the right time. Having a good name — after Barbara Bradley Baekgaard’s mother. And having so many friends who helped launch what has become an American dream.
The Vera Bradley story is a testimony to the American Dream: While on vacation in March of 1982, Patricia Miller and Barbara were awaiting a flight in Atlanta when they noticed a definite lack of feminine-looking luggage. The longtime friends wasted no time in correcting this situation. Within weeks, these dynamic women had created a company, named after Barbara’s mother, capable of marketing and manufacturing their cleverly designed products. The demand for these unique handbags and luggage items has grown and so has Vera Bradley, which is now nationally and internationally recognized.

Adding a new lamp shade to an outdated, boring lamp that you already own is sometimes all it takes to reveal hidden potential! These days, it’s all about working with what you’ve got!
Our friend Emily was in the market for new lamps, but when she saw these brushed nickel lamp bases at a yard sale, she knew they had potential! With their simple silhouette and improperly fitted shades, they left much to be desired, but she snatched them up for $5 each and came running to us for help! Emily trusted our expertise and handed these sad little lamps over to us for an extreme makeover, Shades of Light style!

She ended up choosing the Black and White French Country Toile Drum Shade and we love the way that these black and white shades add graphic texture and contrast in her room! Here is the final result…eye candy! Thanks to Emily for allowing us to help her with her lamp makeover!

Emily trusted our expertise and handed these sad little lamps over to us for an extreme makeover, Shades of Light style!

We couldn’t help but get excited when we saw these lamps! A basic table lamp base can be like the little black dress of home decorating…Just dying for some fabulous accessories! We saw this as an instant opportunity to showcase our extensive collection of unique lamp shades and how they can add some major impact to your décor, without a major cost.
She sent us some pics of her ultra girly bedroom and we got right down to business.

We immediately knew that we wanted to pull another pattern into the room and thought that a more modern drum shade style could be a nice balance with the feminine style that the room possessed. We sent her home with some lamp shade options to let her ultimately decide exactly what she would be most happy with.
We love the simple, yet updated style of our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shades
We offer them in loads of fun fabrics. For Emily, we chose three fabric options: French Country Toile Drum Shade in Berry and Cream, Black and Cream Damask and also French Country Toile Drum Shade in Black and White.

We had so much fun with Emily’s makeover and we got a little carried away with the endless design options for these lamps, we couldn’t resist the urge to fantasize and play with some other accessorizing options and created our own little dream room, designed around these lamps!
Again, we paired them with our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shade in Black and White Bamboo and added a funky Turquoise Metal Flower Finial for a little extra pizzazz!

16″ Patterned Fabric Shade, Metal Flower Petal Lamp Finial
This super fun combo was a showstopper when we placed it against our bright green wall (Sherwin Williams Parakeet SW6385) on a contrasting modern black table.
We decided to go a little further and really make this project our own (literally) by adding our sweet Monogrammed Paper Shades. We offer the monograms in Four styles and Five colors. Check them out below!

This week at our Flagship Store in Richmond VA we’ve been having such fun. Our First (soon to be annual) Trunk Show began Wednesday for a two day event.

It dawned on us we haven’t shared our Crown Jewel with our blogging community. Take “a-look-see” at all the fun and if you’re ever near Richmond stop by. It is a unique gem of a store with over 6000 square feet of amazing and rare finds. Our gracious staff of experts aims to please and loves to give first timers the tour.

We rolled out an exciting display of Custom Lampshades. Our clients were invited to stop by & design their own lampshade!

We had all the fixings; fabulous fabrics in an array of colors, styles & designs, trims & an army of frame styles. Folks brought by their lamps & the fun began.

Clients could also design their own lamp! We had porcelain vases with choices of bases & finials. Custom shades were available along with our large selection of stock shades; caused quite a stir!

Last but certainly not least was a truck full of one of kind hand-knot rugs. There were thousands! There were Persians, Oushaks, Heriz, Kilims and some precious antiques; just to name a few. Our designers and clients were enthralled & the rugs went flying out the door!

After months of planning we are happily exhausted & thrilled with the results!
To be included in our next event sign up for our Event Emails. If you are in the area of 95 & 64 stop by! We welcome your arrival. Also visit our 2 other locations: in Virginia Beach on Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA and our Decorating Outlet on Midlothian Turnpike, Richmond VA!
Need a new look? Planning and organizing your thoughts with your vision can be a daunting task! Our design team works for months on our cover shots.
We start by scouring magazines & tearing out pages that inspire us; pour over fabric books; paint charts;
