Before the Transformation…

Let’s just say our basement was not a show place & leave it at that. It served as a “multi-purpose” room in the broadest of senses. Old stereo equipment dating back to husband Dave’s years of collecting the latest & greatest in Hi Fi, 8 Track, Cassette Recorders, etc. etc., etc. Hand me down sofa from my sisters first house, etc. etc., etc.  Oh yeah did I mention the Electronic Piano??? You get the picture; brings new meaning to “fallout shelter.”

So the transformation began with my need for bright color & the family’s need for a Family Fun Room/Media Room. Found the rug & the rest just came together one, two, three; really- it all happened in 1 hour of being at the furniture market with some of our favorite supplier.

Found the rug & ottoman

and then turned & walked around the corner & there was the Chandelier,

Back in Richmond we got down to the details of accessories & lighting. Here is where I pulled in our Design Team. The Outdoor light for the prints just spoke to all of us; love them! The gloss white & design is so right with the prints. We decided to keep with the color story & bring in this cool table lamp in the orange & bravo! It made a huge impact.

Deciding the wall color was even simple as we all agreed Yellow was the right choice. We went with a vibrant , buttery yellow  to keep things uplifted & crisp. The family is happy, hubby loves the chaise lounge connected to the sofa & our Loki can’t stop chasing her tail when we let her visit the new room. Not sure that is because she loves the room or she really is “Loki” ;)

Shade it if you Got it!

Adding a new lamp shade to an outdated, boring lamp that you already own is sometimes all it takes to reveal hidden potential!  These days, it’s all about working with what you’ve got!

Our friend Emily was in the market for new lamps, but when she saw these brushed nickel lamp bases at a yard sale, she knew they had potential! With their simple silhouette and improperly fitted shades, they left much to be desired, but she snatched them up for $5 each and came running to us for help! Emily trusted our expertise and handed these sad little lamps over to us for an extreme makeover, Shades of Light style!

We couldn’t help but get excited when we saw these lamps!  A basic table lamp base can be like the little black dress of home decorating…Just dying for some fabulous accessories!  We saw this as an instant opportunity to showcase our extensive collection of unique lamp shades and how they can add some major impact to your décor, without a major cost.

She sent us some pics of her ultra girly bedroom and we got right down to business.

We immediately knew that we wanted to pull another pattern into the room and thought that a more modern drum shade style could be a nice balance with the feminine style that the room possessed.  We sent her home with some lamp shade options to let her ultimately decide exactly what she would be most happy with.

We love the simple, yet updated style of our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shades

We offer them in loads of fun fabrics.  For Emily, we chose three fabric options: French Country Toile Drum Shade in Berry and Cream, Black and Cream Damask and also French Country Toile Drum Shade in Black and White.

She ended up choosing the Black and White French Country Toile Drum Shade and we love the way that these black and white shades add graphic texture and contrast in her room!  Here is the final result…eye candy! Thanks to Emily for allowing us to help her with her lamp makeover!

We had so much fun with Emily’s makeover and we got a little carried away with the endless design options for these lamps, we couldn’t resist the urge to fantasize and play with some other accessorizing options and created our own little dream room, designed around these lamps!

Again, we paired them with our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shade in Black and White Bamboo and added a funky Turquoise Metal Flower Finial for a little extra pizzazz!

This super fun combo was a showstopper when we placed it against our bright green wall (Sherwin Williams Parakeet SW6385) on a contrasting modern black table.

We decided to go a little further and really make this project our own (literally) by adding our sweet Monogrammed Paper Shades.  We offer the monograms in Four styles and Five colors.  Check them out below!

Freshen up your home without emptying your wallet!

Looking to freshen your home without emptying your wallet?  Check out these simple ideas to keep costs low and results high.

  • Paint one wall an accent color or a deeper shade of the color you already have. If the room is long & narrow, paint a warm dark color on the short wall. Or paint the ceiling a light cool color. Or just paint the fireplace wall section an accent color. Add new lamps with that accent color.

  • Paint a piece of furniture (such as a coffee table or 2 end tables) an accent color. Be sure to use the proper prep (ask the local hardware store for guidance).
  • Rearrange your furniture and add a new rug. Change or recover your throw pillows or try “wrapping” them with your favorite scarf.

  • Take an existing console or end table and add a storage shelf on the bottom for baskets to hold “stuff”. Paint the shelf an accent color or use antique wood flooring. Or sell an existing piece of furniture at a consignment store and replace it with a storage piece like a mirrored furniture piece that will always go with any look you do.
  • Add inexpensive seating “stools” that can double as end tables. Paint them a fun color or distress them and “paint” with an antique wash.
  • Add accent lighting (plant lights on timers, picture lights, spotlight on sculpture or architectural feature). You will be amazed at how much accent lighting can do for a room at night! Put dimmers on all other lighting in the room.

  • Add some interest to your walls by taking all pictures down and rearranging them in a new plan on the floor, adding short shelves made from antique molding (for collections of sculpture, colored or clear glass, candles or candlesticks), table clocks and decorative items from the kitchen that can be hung on the wall (platters or plates, containers that can hold trailing greenery, handmade bowls, etc.), and small mirrors hung from decorative chain or interesting ribbon. Try adding an open empty frame (antique ones are great) around a plate or platter (maybe even on the diagonal).
  • Add a “fun” fabric lamp shade on a plain lamp.

  • New monogrammed towels for your bathroom (Hit the white sales!).
  • Frame your bathroom mirror with antique molding, polyurethane molding painted in an accent color, upholstery braid, or outdoor ribbon.
