Before and After Contest Winner!

Author: Katrina

The time is finally here! It is time to announce the big winner or our customers BEFORE AND AFTER CONTEST. We had some really great entries. I was truly impressed with our customers spaces, displaying such creativity and style! I wanted to show everyone our “winners” space as well as some very impressive “honorable mentions”

Let’s start with the winner. The before pictures of this space were the what I would call conventional, not a lot of excitement going on but a nice space none the less.

What a difference a rug makes. Designer Cindy Schwarz chose our Ming Hand-Knotted Rug for her client’s home. It really warms the room and gives it the color it lacked. The rug complements the lovely neutral furniture and picks up the colors in the artwork above the fireplace perfectly. It is amazing how much larger the space feels once the rug is added. The rug defines the space and grounds the center, giving a since of finish and relaxation.

Then Cindy added our Soho Chandelier over the client’s dining table. A clean, classic look, I love how the chandelier complements the lines in the dining chairs and enlivens the warmth of the wood tones.

Nice picks and well done to our winner!!

Now some honorable mentions we just couldn’t keep to ourselves.

Maritza Strand redesigned her bedroom, furniture and all, but in the end found it was still lacking something. By simply changing the ceiling light, the room finally felt like the glamorous redesign she desired. We all hate those “builder boring” flushmount ceiling lights we inherit when we move in. Maritza chose our Organza Shade & Crystal Chandelier to take her room from “generic” to “dazzling”. Yes, you can hang a chandelier close to your ceiling in place of a flushmount!! We have tons of mini chandelier options for those low 8” ceilings.

A stunning kitchen transformation is always fun to see. Mandy Lark accentuated her amazing kitchen redo with our always popular Barcelona Pendant over the kitchen island. The accent lighting complements the space without being overwhelming. These pieces create fun light effects on the walls and ceiling, creating great mood lighting for entertaining. I bet some great parties are to be had in this space. Mandy says, “I feel like I got a whole new room!”

With the holidays approaching and parties to plan, it is time to make a change from last year’s tired décor. I know, I’ve gotten you all worked up now but it’s going to be ok. I am here to help you with some tips for simple changes that can make a world of difference.

Thinking of changes I need to make in my own home I decided to present our design team with a challenge. Transform a room without redesigning the whole thing. Use the elements already in the room and simply add a rug, switch the chandelier or add lampshades. So we did, and this is our story.

I took a team on location to a local customer’s home to perform the transformation. What a lucky customer huh?!? The room we choose was the living room, the holy grail of spaces in the home and a place lots of people struggle to make a change. We left everything just how we found it and simply changed out the rug. We chose several looks from our extensive collection of rugs (click here to check them out).

retail_email_before

Even I was amazed at each transformation. We created three totally different looks just by adding a rug.

retail_email_after1

The first look we choose for this room was a “vintage chic” feel. We chose one of our fabulous antique rugs (click to shop our antique rugs) in soft neutral tones to create a time-loved, “bo-ho”, city chic style. Mixing clean-modern elements with aged-elegant beauties is all the rage now. It is about having a love and respect for pieces with a story to tell, while still staying current for practical living. I love this look and I was so impressed with our first transformation attempt.

retail_email_after3

The next look we went for was straight-up fun and funky. Adding a brightly colored rug with a fun print brought this room to life, a much needed addition to an otherwise drab space (click here to shop out hip/contemporary rug collection).  It was funny how everyone on the set automatically had a new burst of energy. Hmmm, do you think it might have something to do with the rug…I do!

retail_email_after2

Finally we landed somewhere in the middle with a clean yet classic hand-tufted rug in a soft smoky teal (click here to shop our new rugs). This rug gave the room the feel of a downtown lounge with its smoky color and shimmer (the shimmer is created by mixing viscose threads in the wool tufting). Giving the room a relaxing yet “oh so cool” feel, I felt like curling up on the chaise and sipping coffee while reading my favorite book. Umm, after that bit of daydreaming I was sure it was time to go. We had accomplished our mission.

But wait, now we want to hear from you!

I know our customers are greatly talented, so I want to see your transformation stories. Send me your story along with picture of how, with our products you were able to transform your home. By sending your story & pictures, full name, a valid home address, phone & email address to awharrison@shadesoflight.com by December 31, 2010 you will entered to win a $250 Shades of Light gift certificate! A winner will be selected by a panel of our judges and notified no later then January 25, 2011. For complete rules click here. I will feature several of my favorite transformations on the blog. What a great way to impress your friends at your holiday parties. You just happened to leave the computer on at the party with your lovely home featured on the screen. Love it! See the rules and details below and happy transforming!

After the Transformation Part II

How lucky to be coming out of a major structural renovation on our house to have such a great choice of products for our house from our cover shoots for Summer 2010.

As you can see our bath off of the  main room was screaming for a “makeover” and our design team rallied!

xu0134wo-01

Started the project choosing Reclaimed Pickled Wood Side Board and worked the room around this charming piece.

Teamed up with husband Dave to choose the sink with hardware & the lighting fixture; sure he wanted bronze & I wanted nickel but aside from that ( and you see who won….) must say pretty smooth sailing as these things go!

mirror1Recycled Wood Mirror

Found the green filigree wallpaper & had to have it; really complimented the new cabinet & I love the feeling it gives the room.

afternew

The mirror was the last piece. Since with the 7.5 foot ceilings, space was limited! See our collection of smaller mirrors on the web for tight spots!

Before the Transformation…

Let’s just say our basement was not a show place & leave it at that. It served as a “multi-purpose” room in the broadest of senses. Old stereo equipment dating back to husband Dave’s years of collecting the latest & greatest in Hi Fi, 8 Track, Cassette Recorders, etc. etc., etc. Hand me down sofa from my sisters first house, etc. etc., etc.  Oh yeah did I mention the Electronic Piano??? You get the picture; brings new meaning to “fallout shelter.”

So the transformation began with my need for bright color & the family’s need for a Family Fun Room/Media Room. Found the rug & the rest just came together one, two, three; really- it all happened in 1 hour of being at the furniture market with some of our favorite supplier.

Found the rug & ottoman

and then turned & walked around the corner & there was the Chandelier,

next corner were the Geometric Prints! Poof! Done!

Back in Richmond we got down to the details of accessories & lighting. Here is where I pulled in our Design Team. The Outdoor light for the prints just spoke to all of us; love them! The gloss white & design is so right with the prints. We decided to keep with the color story & bring in this cool table lamp in the orange & bravo! It made a huge impact.

Deciding the wall color was even simple as we all agreed Yellow was the right choice. We went with a vibrant , buttery yellow  to keep things uplifted & crisp. The family is happy, hubby loves the chaise lounge connected to the sofa & our Loki can’t stop chasing her tail when we let her visit the new room. Not sure that is because she loves the room or she really is “Loki” ;)

Here’s her letter…

Hi folks – this is long overdue, but our renovation finished at last and we finally got around to snapping some pics of the wonderful pendant lights that we got from the retail store last fall.  Thought you all might get a kick out of seeing them in place.  They are really stunning, just breathtakingly beautiful and everyone comments on them!  Many thanks to all the folks who opened every last shade to let us pick our favorite two.  Thanks again for all your great help!

Flea Market Antiques

At Shades of Light we love shopping flea markets and antique shops! Part of the fun is the “hunt” for ideas we can turn into products or along the way we find things for our own homes.  We were out bargain hunting recently and we found this great antique vase. It had such great potential and we knew exactly what it needed. Our fantastic team of electricians here easily made it into a fabulous table lamp. Wanted to show how easily a shade can change the look of a table lamp so we went with two options. First we chose a classic Scalloped Oval Silk Shade with a pearlized finial for a dressier look. For a tailored style we went with an Oval Drum Shade in linen topped with a brass ever popular Butterfly finial. One base; two looks!

We started with this pretty blushy peach antique vase

While out on our rummage shopping another amazing find were two distressed iron scroll railings that we had to have!

blog_antique_sconce

Our vision was to create old world sconces and update them with chandelier shades to pull it all together. Here are three options that gave a different look to these one of a kind sconces.

First we picked this precious painted tin shade in “girly girl” colors of pink & green for a whimsical look.

The Next shade was a more traditional look with a Fleur De Lis insignia.

Last but not least we chose a pretty ruffled shade in white & to give it a punch added a pink polka dot candle cover; adorable!

Dress to Impress!

Just like you would dress up an outfit with fabulous accessories for a unique and polished look, you should do the same for the light fixtures in your home!

Accessorizing the lighting in your home is a great way to dress up your decor.  Adding small touches of color and pattern adds fresh style to your decor and creates unique and distinguished look.

It’s all in the Details….
We love a finished, polished look, right down to the candle sleeves on our light fixtures!  What better way to spruce up your favorite chandelier, sconce or even a bath light than replacing those plain and boring plastic candle sleeves with fabulous, designer paper-covered candle sleeves!  kaarskoker decorative candle sleeves are the latest craze in home decorating and are available in tons of chic patterns and colors.  We had so much fun transforming a few of our favorite fixtures with the clever little accessories!

A good cover up….
Want to hide those ugly chandelier chains and wild table lamp cords that take away from the beauty of the lights in your home?  Try adding a colorful chain cover to hide all of your cords and chains, while coordinating them with your light fixtures, shades and other color schemes in your home!   Our exclusive silk chain covers are available in tons of colors (to coordinate with our exclusive silk lamp shades ) and are easy to apply to cords and chains with a convenient Velcro feature.  Take a look below at how they can really create a finished look and dress up your home lighting!

So shady…
Adding chandelier shades to hanging light fixtures is a very easy and affordable way to transform and update your décor as often as you like, without having to buy new fixtures.  Our extensive collection of chandelier shades offers a wide variety of colors, sizes and materials for accessorizing your lights, no matter what your style!  See our favorite new chandelier shades below, for just a taste of what we have to offer.

If you’re not the shady type….
Try adding decorative bulbs or bulb covers to your chandeliers or other hanging lights to create different looks to coordinate with your décor style.  Adding a faux wax drip bulb can create an antique look for vintage style fixtures or try faceted diamond cut bulbs on formal crystal chandeliers for extra sparkle and shine!  Decorative bulbs are also a fun and easy way to update your lighting for holidays and special occasions.

Shade it if you Got it!

Adding a new lamp shade to an outdated, boring lamp that you already own is sometimes all it takes to reveal hidden potential!  These days, it’s all about working with what you’ve got!

Our friend Emily was in the market for new lamps, but when she saw these brushed nickel lamp bases at a yard sale, she knew they had potential! With their simple silhouette and improperly fitted shades, they left much to be desired, but she snatched them up for $5 each and came running to us for help! Emily trusted our expertise and handed these sad little lamps over to us for an extreme makeover, Shades of Light style!

We couldn’t help but get excited when we saw these lamps!  A basic table lamp base can be like the little black dress of home decorating…Just dying for some fabulous accessories!  We saw this as an instant opportunity to showcase our extensive collection of unique lamp shades and how they can add some major impact to your dĂ©cor, without a major cost.

She sent us some pics of her ultra girly bedroom and we got right down to business.

We immediately knew that we wanted to pull another pattern into the room and thought that a more modern drum shade style could be a nice balance with the feminine style that the room possessed.  We sent her home with some lamp shade options to let her ultimately decide exactly what she would be most happy with.

We love the simple, yet updated style of our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shades

Fabric Drum Shade-18 patterns

We offer them in loads of fun fabrics.  For Emily, we chose three fabric options: French Country Toile Drum Shade in Berry and Cream, Black and Cream Damask and also French Country Toile Drum Shade in Black and White.

Fabric Drum Shade-18 patterns

She ended up choosing the Black and White French Country Toile Drum Shade and we love the way that these black and white shades add graphic texture and contrast in her room!  Here is the final result…eye candy! Thanks to Emily for allowing us to help her with her lamp makeover!

We had so much fun with Emily’s makeover and we got a little carried away with the endless design options for these lamps, we couldn’t resist the urge to fantasize and play with some other accessorizing options and created our own little dream room, designed around these lamps!

Again, we paired them with our 15″ Patterned Fabric Drum Shade in Black and White Bamboo and added a funky Turquoise Metal Flower Finial for a little extra pizzazz!

16″ Patterned Fabric Shade,Metal Flower Petal Lamp Finial

This super fun combo was a showstopper when we placed it against our bright green wall (Sherwin Williams Parakeet SW6385) on a contrasting modern black table.

We decided to go a little further and really make this project our own (literally) by adding our sweet Monogrammed Paper Shades.  We offer the monograms in Four styles and Five colors.  Check them out below!

Before & After: Meem’s Dining Room

Molly and Lange Meem from Richmond VA sought out our design team to transform the home they moved into 10 years earlier & never got around to decorating. Before, this dining room lacked pop & the Meem’s were ready for a fresh new look. The room was full of hand-me-down furniture and white walls – it was time to update! The couple was a lot of fun to work with and chose pieces from our popular mirrored furniture collection to transform and make it appear larger. With a little space planning, paint, hip furnishings, as well as a new rug & chandelier, we transformed this underwhelming room into a fresh & inviting space.
