With the holidays approaching and parties to plan, it is time to make a change from last year’s tired décor. I know, I’ve gotten you all worked up now but it’s going to be ok. I am here to help you with some tips for simple changes that can make a world of difference.
Thinking of changes I need to make in my own home I decided to present our design team with a challenge. Transform a room without redesigning the whole thing. Use the elements already in the room and simply add a rug, switch the chandelier or add lampshades. So we did, and this is our story.
I took a team on location to a local customer’s home to perform the transformation. What a lucky customer huh?!? The room we choose was the living room, the holy grail of spaces in the home and a place lots of people struggle to make a change. We left everything just how we found it and simply changed out the rug. We chose several looks from our extensive collection of rugs (click here to check them out).
Even I was amazed at each transformation. We created three totally different looks just by adding a rug.
The first look we choose for this room was a “vintage chic” feel. We chose one of our fabulous antique rugs (click to shop our antique rugs) in soft neutral tones to create a time-loved, “bo-ho”, city chic style. Mixing clean-modern elements with aged-elegant beauties is all the rage now. It is about having a love and respect for pieces with a story to tell, while still staying current for practical living. I love this look and I was so impressed with our first transformation attempt.
The next look we went for was straight-up fun and funky. Adding a brightly colored rug with a fun print brought this room to life, a much needed addition to an otherwise drab space (click here to shop out hip/contemporary rug collection). It was funny how everyone on the set automatically had a new burst of energy. Hmmm, do you think it might have something to do with the rug…I do!
Finally we landed somewhere in the middle with a clean yet classic hand-tufted rug in a soft smoky teal (click here to shop our new rugs). This rug gave the room the feel of a downtown lounge with its smoky color and shimmer (the shimmer is created by mixing viscose threads in the wool tufting). Giving the room a relaxing yet “oh so cool” feel, I felt like curling up on the chaise and sipping coffee while reading my favorite book. Umm, after that bit of daydreaming I was sure it was time to go. We had accomplished our mission.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Sundays 8/7c on ABC
On one of those 100 degree 100% humidity days last summer, my daughter and I visited Baltimore to join the awesome crew for Extreme Makeover’s Maryland Project. The sizzling temperatures did not slow down any of the film crew, designers, TV hosts or volunteer workers at all! It was a miraculous display of teamwork and sweat! Only I couldn’t figure out why the celebrities never looked like they were melting— a special breed? With a film crew in one corner, my daughter & I painting a stairwell in another corner, designers frantically adding last minute touches, and volunteers bringing in more merchandise, the basement room came together in record time! They REALLY do complete those huge projects in a week! It all worked like clockwork with nobody even getting upset! We are honored to have provided the lighting for the project. We have a world-class art museum right here in Richmond, Va. and I was so excited when the Tiffany Color & Light exhibition came this summer. During my musical stroll through the galleries, I was awed by the dimensional aspects of Tiffany Glassworks: the depth of colors; the breadth of glass types; the layering techniques used; and the 3-D effects of the stained glass windows. Louis Tiffany’s trademark magnolia stained-glass window exhibits all of these!
Rainbow-like iridescence, golden luster (known as Favrile), and lava-like cypronite glass are just some of his specialties. Inspired by nature, Louis Tiffany developed ways to make glass look like feathers, draperies, confetti, water, jewels (cabochon), granite, lava, ice, and more. One of his famed “Tiffany girls”, Claire Driscoll, designed many of the well-known classic lamps such as the Wisteria and the Dragonfly stained glass lamps. The mark that Tiffany and his glass-making studios made on the stained glass industry remains a strong influence today, over 100 years later!

How lucky to be coming out of a major structural renovation on our house to have such a great choice of products for our house from our cover shoots for Summer 2010.
For the Family Fun/Media Room see After the Transformation Part I
As you can see our bath off of the main room was screaming for a “makeover” and our design team rallied!
Started the project choosing Reclaimed Pickled Wood Side Board and worked the room around this charming piece.
Teamed up with husband Dave to choose the sink with hardware & the lighting fixture; sure he wanted bronze & I wanted nickel but aside from that ( and you see who won….) must say pretty smooth sailing as these things go!
Recycled Wood Mirror
Found the green filigree wallpaper & had to have it; really complimented the new cabinet & I love the feeling it gives the room.

Let’s just say our basement was not a show place & leave it at that. It served as a “multi-purpose” room in the broadest of senses. Old stereo equipment dating back to husband Dave’s years of collecting the latest & greatest in Hi Fi, 8 Track, Cassette Recorders, etc. etc., etc. Hand me down sofa from my sisters first house, etc. etc., etc. Oh yeah did I mention the Electronic Piano??? You get the picture; brings new meaning to “fallout shelter.”
So the transformation began with my need for bright color & the family’s need for a Family Fun Room/Media Room. Found the rug & the rest just came together one, two, three; really- it all happened in 1 hour of being at the furniture market with some of our favorite supplier.

Back in Richmond we got down to the details of accessories & lighting. Here is where I pulled in our Design Team. The Outdoor light for the prints just spoke to all of us; love them! The gloss white & design is so right with the prints. We decided to keep with the color story & bring in this cool table lamp in the orange & bravo! It made a huge impact.

Add a crowning touch to your chandelier, lantern or ceiling fan. It helps to balance and visually anchor your lighting fixture. 2/3 the width of your chandelier is the correct size of your ceiling medallion. Today’s ceiling medallions are made from faux plaster or high-density polyurethane, making installation easy and affordable. Ours come already primed with white paint, ready to faux finish or just left white! Ceiling medallion installation is easy using any construction adhesive.
